The annual “Journalist of the Year” and “Young Journalist of the Year” honors top journalists (reporters, editors, producers, anchors, photojournalists, etc.) in southeastern Michigan.
Nominees will be judged on their overall quality of work produced in 2019. SPJ Detroit will base its selections on nominations received by Monday, March 23, 2020.
Young Journalist of the Year: Nominees must be 30 years old or younger. Nominees who turned 31 in 2019 are still eligible. Nominees must have at least 1 year of paid, full-time work experience (or equivalent experience if freelance). Internships do not qualify.
No entry fee is required.
Judges also will consider the nominee’s impact on the practice of journalism, their service to their leadership practices. All entries must include and be based on the journalist’s original work.
Nominations must include:
· A letter of nomination from a supervisor stating why the individual should be considered as the “Journalist of the Year” or “Young Journalist of the Year.” Applications from freelance journalists’ applications must include letters from two (2) supervisors.
· A resume/work history.
· Work samples.
o “Journalist of the Year” – a submission of 5 to 10 work samples is required.
o “Young Journalist of the Year” – a submission of 3 to 5 samples is required, including a brief explanation of each. Those explanations should include context for the judges.
o Freelance journalists – Nominees are required to submit 10 samples in all categories.
