FOIA: Learn How to Access Government Information

The Flint Water crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic. Racial profiling.

FOIA has exposed critical information behind them all.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides us the right to request access to records from any federal agency to be “in the know” about government activities. And states have passed similar laws. FOIA is a valuable tool that empowers citizens, the press, and attorneys to access information normally kept out of public view.

Knowledge is power! Learn how to access government information in our FOIA Workshop.

About this Event

Since 1976, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has provided the public the right to request access to records from any federal agency in order to be “in the know” about their government. Did you know that more FOIA requests come from citizens than professional media organizations? FOIA gives you and the press the right and the tools to find and access this information.

Hear it from the experts

AWC Detroit and the Society of Professional Journalists have brought together an outstanding panel of experts to help us fully understand our FOIA rights, how to exercise them, and the critical role that FOIA has played in providing needed transparency in our democracy through discussion of case studies and lessons learned.

Our esteemed panel

  • Kathy Barks Hoffman, Vice President, Martin Waymire PR and Strategic Communications
  • Vincent Duffy, News Director, Michigan Radio
  • Katrease Stafford, National Race & Ethnicity Writer, Associated Press
  • Robin Luce-Herrmann, Shareholder, Butzel Long and General Counsel, Michigan Press Association

Moderator: Beth Konrad, Principal, Konrad Communications & Consulting, LLC and Adjunct Professor, Wayne State University
