Join Michigan’s finest news and PR professionals for workshops on how to land coverage and pitch your ideas directly to newsroom editors at our Media Access Day event!
When: Sat. Aug. 12, 2023
Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Fox 2 Detroit in Southfield (carpool at Ascension)
Why: Far too often, the media is told they should cover events or topics with important individuals, but sometimes these can be overlooked because of the way they are pitched or because of their content. At this workshop, we’ll dive into how reporters and assignment editors see pitches, what we’re looking for, our thoughts on what deserves coverage and why.
Hosts: Michigan Media Access Day is hosted by the following affinity groups, which will also be present for networking and engagement: the AAJA Michigan, Detroit Chapter-National Association of Black Journalists, SPJ Detroit and PRSA Detroit Chapter.
“Shark Tank” pitches: Attendees who wish to practice what they’ve learned will pitch story ideas to a panel of newsroom leaders in hopes of landing coverage on the spot. This will show that not every pitch has to be for every organization and that residents can tailor their pitches to land even more coverage.
Cost: $20 or donations. Students, freelancers and one representative from each newsroom attends for free.
We invite you to join us as a newsroom/PR leader at this event.
(There will be a small shared table space to bring business cards/product, but please no banners or table cloths.) By doing so, you’ll help our effort to increase accessibility, transparency and can build a stronger relationship with community members who could be future sources. If you’re ready to commit, please respond back with your organization’s logo and who we can expect to be there. RSVP Deadline: Aug. 6.
