Kelley Root is Special Projects editor for The Detroit News, focusing on in-depth journalism and investigations. Her previous roles at The News included Macomb County bureau chief, suburban editor and managing editor. She also served as Executive Editor at Crain’s Detroit Business and was a reporter and editor at The Grand Rapids Press. A graduate of Michigan State University’s School of Journalism, Kelley is a strong advocate for transparency in government and testified in a successful Open Meetings Act lawsuit while at The Press. She is a lifelong Michigander who grew up in Oak Park and now lives in Grosse Pointe Farms.
