Meet Kennan
Board Member
Kennan Oliphant, Vice President of News and Station Manager, CBS Detroit.
Kennan is not just responsible for setting the news strategy but also has oversight of CBS Detroit station operations. Prior to joining CBS, he was the Senior Director of News for WXYZ/ WMYD in Southfield, Michigan where he was responsible for every newsroom function, including developing strategic plans for its on-air, online and social media products. Before Kennan’s tenure as Senior Director of News, he was the assistant news director for WXYZ/WMYD for two years. Kennan also worked as the Senior Manager of Broadcast for WCPO 9 On Your Side in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Kennan, originally from Detroit, Michigan, has lived in multiple states working as a journalist. He began his career behind the scenes as a writer for WDIV Local 4 in Detroit before getting his big break to be an on-air reporter for KNOE 8 in Monroe, Louisiana. Spending less than a year in Louisiana, Kennan moved to Evansville, Indiana, where he was a reporter for a little over a year. Kennan was then recruited to WDTN-TV in Dayton, Ohio, where he spent 5 years as the Chief Consumer Investigative reporter and Weekend Anchor. Looking for a different challenge, and one with a little more anonymity, Kennan left the bright lights and cameras to become the morning executive producer for WMBF News in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Three years later he was promoted to Assistant News Director for WLBT the NBC/ FOX duopoly station in Jackson, Mississippi. A couple of years after that, he called Memphis, Tennessee home. He took on the role of Manager of Coverage and Content for WHBQ FOX13 for three years.
Kennan is married and has two children ages 13 and 11. When Kennan isn’t working, he spends his time watching movies, playing golf or cheering his kids on during swim competitions.
