SPJ Detroit is offering a special skills-building opportunity to all members of the state’s journalism community.

The local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is partnering with the Google News Initiative to offer a free one-hour workshop on tools that will help journalists enhance their reporting, streamline workflows, improve digital safety and boost audience engagement. These tools are designed to help journalists work smarter and better by being more efficient and combating misinformation in a fast-changing media landscape.

The session will include training on tools that will help journalists and newsrooms as they cover the 2026 elections.

The workshop is being presented free of charge at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Southfield offices of WWJ Newsradio 950, whose news director, Rob Davidek, is a vice president of SPJ Detroit.

Veteran journalist, Benet Wilson, will be traveling to Michigan to conduct the workshop.  There will be space for 20 people on location, so please register early. However, there will also be a Zoom alternative for those who cannot attend in person.

When registering, journalists should remember to specify if they plan to join the session in person or via Zoom.

We will provide additional information as the date approaches. After we reach capacity at WWJ, we will automatically register interested journalists so they can participate virtually.

If you have any questions, please contact us at spjdetroit@gmail.com

I want to thank Rob, Tracy and Marcia for their work on making this possible.

The Google Tools workshop is one of various programs, events, networking opportunities and other services that SPJ Detroit provides the journalism community throughout the year. A statewide professional organization, it brings together journalists and newsrooms from all media platforms to promote ethics, excellence and diversity in the industry, addressing the challenges facing our evolving industry landscape.

In addition to advocating for press freedom and government transparency, SPJ Detroit supports the next generation of journalists through scholarships and mentorship.

We hope that you will consider joining the cause by becoming a member of SPJ Detroit. Just visit www.spjdetroit.org
