In its inaugural year, the silent auction at the annual SPJ Detroit banquet raised approximately $500 for the chapter’s scholarship fund, which supports yearly grants of up to $2,500 for Michigan college students with a demonstrated interest in journalism.
We are reaching out to invite you to support our upcoming second silent auction, which will take place at our Excellence in Journalism Awards banquet on May 14, 2025 at the San Marino Club in Troy.
Would you please consider donating an item to help provide funds for scholarships?
Perhaps you have a cool item around your house that would generate some hefty bidding. Or you know of an organization that would like to support us by donating a product or service.
Gifted items will be prominently displayed during the event and acknowledged in our promotional materials and social media.
Here are examples of appealing auction items:
- Restaurant gift certificates
- Books signed by authors
- Concert, theater and other tickets
- Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Wings tickets
- Newsroom swag or memorabilia
- Wines or fine liquors
- A stay at a cabin up North, or other travel packages
- Donation of services like book-editing or photo shoots
- Scrabble boards, Bananagrams, Boggle, Upwords and other items for word nerds
- T-shirts, hats, piggy bank, mugs with punny (get it?) sayings
- Photographs by local journalists
If you are interested in participating by donating an item or working with a donor organization, please let us know. We would be happy to pick up your donation. May 7 is the deadline to submit an auction item donation for consideration.
